94 GSR cluster swap into an 88 CRX.By Ben Ogle.

Note: This is sort of incomplete. Me and my buddy did this a while ago so every little detail is not going to be written. But this swap isn't that hard in the first place so it shouldn't be a big deal. I intend to remember the rest of the hang ups we had and how we fixed them.

Oooh, sexy!

What you need:
An EF civic or CRX (88-89 for this wiring chart to work)
94+ GSR cluster
94+ integra cluster wiring harness (note: we used a 94 LS harness so the wire colors may be a little different than yours)
90-91 civic or CRX cluster hood/cover (its more round and fits the cluster, see above pic)
A VSS out of a EF SiR or a newer civic/integra.
Some wire and wire strippers
Shrink tube
A soldering iron
Patience
A printout of the chart below
A lack of fear of wiring

First you gotta take out your old cluster. Its pretty straight forward. You can figure it out.

Next, you take out the speedo cable and replace the speedo cable drive in your tranny with the VSS you have. We used one from an EF SiR because it came on his B16 swap.

Then you have to do a bunch of wiring. If you have ever seen pictures of this swap on various message boards then you have probably seen pictures of a huge mess of wires. Its not as bad as it looks. Really. Just take it one wire at a time. I would suggest doing the VSS last.

A quote regarding the VSS from here (and its right):
"If you look at the [VSS] plug and have the snap facing away from you it goes. power signal ground"

So you run the power to a switched power source, then the ground to ground. We had a lot of problems figuring out the VSS wiring. The VSS wiring in the above link has worked for a few folks but did not work for us. For us it blinked the battery light to the VSS signal and did not send the VSS signal to the ECU (which needs to happen). So what we ended up doing was connecting the VSS signal wire (the middle wire on the plug) to ECU pin B16 and to the orange wire (pin B6) on the back of the cluster. The wire that goes to ECU pin B16 is present on the stock cluster plugs, but I don't know what pin number. I do know, however, that it is a yellow/red wire.

the orange wire goes to cluster pin B6

Also, we did NOT hook up cluster pin B11 which, for some reason, just traces to the battery light. So with this wiring configuration the battery light will not work. I don't know how the battery light circuit works so I didn't mess with it.

Then you have to change the plug on the defroster. Its different (I think) so you just match the wire colors to the new plug. The defrost plug is the small green one.

Green plug is the drfrost plug.

After wiring you need to put the cluster in. None of the bolt holes line up and the cluster is actually too wide to fit in the dash. So to fix this you need to grind off one of the mounting ears. We ground off the right ear. Then once you get the cluster in you have to figure out a way to secure it. That is again up to you. I don't want to give you any bad advice. We used a very non-secure method.

Chart:
This is the main reason for putting this up as we couldn't find a chart for the GSR cluster into the 88-89 cars.

There are 2 plugs on your CRX, one is bigger than the other one. The smaller on is labeled "sm" on the chart. On the GSR plugs the bigger of the 2 is the "B" plug:
16 pin B plug

and the other is the "C" plug:
13 pin C plug

The yellow plug is for SRS stuff and is not used for our EF's. If you wanted you could wire some of the unused lights to your own stuff (like the SRS lights or the cruise control lights) but I'll leave that up to you, they are easy to figure out by looking at the back of the cluster.
